I once stumbled into this basement club where they were playing really loud, really raw rock and roll—you know the kind where you can feel
the bass beating in your chest. It was these three guys: lead guitar, bass guitar and drums. At one point in the song, the two guitarists very casually walked
off stage, picked up their beers, and joined their friends, like they were done for the night.
The drummer kept playing. And playing. He stood up in front of his drum set and played from there. Then he started playing on the mic stands. Then the
tables in front of the stage. He moved through the tiny, smoky club, keeping his rhythm, playing on chairs, beer glasses, walls, anything he could find. He made
his way through the bar and out into the street. All this time everyone in the club kept their focus on him... it was completely mesmerizing. He worked his
way back into the club, through the tables and chairs and glasses, and back up on to the stage.
It was incredible. It’s not really the kind of music I like, but I was completely energized. I think everyone has had a similar experience with music—
it’s easy to see and feel how it transforms us.
It’s not always so easy to make that connection with design. But creativity is a kind of energy that gets someone’s attention in a way they’d
never expected, and creates a connection. You hear something new or interesting and tell someone about it, creating excitement. That’s what I work to do
for every client and with every project.
